Morehead City, N.C. – Eric Miles has been selected as the 2019 Coastal Plain League Pitcher of the Year, according to a league announcement Tuesday afternoon. Miles becomes the first Marlins' pitcher in organization history to win the CPL's Pitcher of the Year award.
"It's a huge honor to be recognized for this award. None of it would be possible without those guys in the field having my back every game," Miles said. "It's great to be individually recognized but nothing means more than winning the Petitt Cup for the best organization and fans in the CPL."
The right hander made 10 appearances, six starts and finished tied for the league most in wins with six. In 48 innings during the summer season Miles struck out 58 batters and boasted an ERA of 2.06. Miles was a main staple in head coach Jesse Lancaster's rotation throughout the summer, helping the club break multiple organization and league records.
"I could not be happier for Eric & this honor that he certainly deserves. Eric is a tireless worker that takes time daily to study his craft. The success he earned came as no surprise to our staff," Coach Lancaster said.
The rising senior was selected to compete in the 2019 CPL All-Star Showdown in Savannah, Ga. where he shined in one inning of work for the East All-Stars, earning the save and posting a strikeout.
Miles arrived in Morehead City this summer via Presbyterian College where he was their Friday night starter. In 93 innings the right hander struck out 84, walked just 20 and earned 7 wins on pace to being a 2019 Big South Conference Honorable Mention.
"One of my favorite aspects of Eric's story is that he and his school coaching staff committed to a full summer season despite logging a good amount of spring innings, because they believed this experience would benefit Eric," coach Lancaster said. "We thank them for trusting us with such a talented player. I am excited to continue to follow Eric's career and fully expect plenty of success for him in the future."
