Morehead City, N.C.- For the second straight summer, the Morehead City Marlins are headed to the Coastal Plain League (CPL) Championship Series after a 4-1 win over the Wilson Tobs.
The scorning opened with an RBI groundout from Bryan Kowalski (Pfeiffer University) in the bottom of the second to put Morehead City up 1-0.
The offense followed it up with two runs in the next inning from an RBI base knock from Dusty Baker (East Carolina University) and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College).
With the run support, Marlins starter Connor Schultz (Butler University) was absolutely locked in, going five innings with nine strikeouts and only allowing one run.
In the sixth, Schultz was succeeded by Ryder Yakel (Harding University) who gave the Marlins two and two thirds innings of shutdown pitching with five strikeouts.
Meanwhile the Marlins offense added an insurance run from a Tobs fielding error to put Morehead City up 4-1.
The win featured 17 strikeouts from the Marlins pitchers, following the trend of the regular season where Morehead City had 10+ K's in 35 of the 51 games.
The Marlins are off on Wednesday ahead of the Championship series which begins Thursday with Morehead City Traveling to Macon, Georgia for game one.
