MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (31-13) defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs (22-23) 4-3 at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night. The Marlins 11th victory over Fayetteville this summer secured the regular season sweep of the SwampDogs.
Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) led off the bottom of the first inning by drawing a walk. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) was then hit by a pitch to put the first two batters on base. A double-steal moved both runners into scoring position with no outs. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) flew out to right field and brought Johnson into score the first run of the game.
Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) took the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning of the helmet to give the Marlins a lead off base runner. Just a couple pitches later Colin Allman (Newberry College) blasted his first home run of the summer over the left field wall to give the Marlins a 3-0 advantage.
Morehead City starter Zach Keenan (Middle Tennessee State) picked up his fourth win of the summer. The freshman allowed just one unearned run in his second longest outing. While not allowing a walk, Keenan struck out 5-of-20 SwampDogs batters he faced.
The SwampDogs leadoff hitter got aboard via an error in the top of the fourth and came around to score their first run of the contest to cut the lead to 3-1.
The bottom of the fifth inning began with Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) being hit by a pitch and then stealing second base. Johnson laced a single through the left side of the infield to bring Dougherty into score from second to push the Marlins lead back to three at 4-1.
Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) took over on the mound in the seventh inning and faced the minimum of three hitters, striking one out.
Left-hander Jake Lewis (UNC-Greensboro) was handed the ball next and tossed a spotless eighth inning with one strike out as well.
Fayetteville threatened in the top of the ninth after working three-consecutive walks and a two-RBI double to bring the game within one run, 4-3. Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) took over with the tying and go-ahead runner on and notched three-straight strikeouts to end the game.
