Marlins Stay Undefeated Against Fayetteville

Fayetteville, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (28-12) remained perfect against the Fayetteville SwampDogs (18-21) on the season with win No. 9 in a 5-3 victory at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

With one out in the top of fourth inning Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) singled through the right side of the infield and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) pushed a single through and advanced to second, pushing Dougherty to third, on the throw in. Colin Allman (Newberry College) put a ground ball on the right side to score the Marlins first run of the game for Morehead City. A fielding error on Alex Pimentel's (Southwestern Oklahoma) scored Shepherd to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.

The SwampDogs used two hits, including a homerun, to score a pair of runs and reclaim the lead at 3-2.

Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) moved his hitting streak to three games with a double to right-center that scored Delevie.

Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) took over in the bottom of the fifth inning. The senior only surrendered one hit to the seven batters he faced in his two frames of work.

With a new reliever on the mound for Fayetteville Hunter Shepherd blasted his second homerun of the season, both coming at J.P. Riddle Stadium, to give the Marlins a 4-3 advantage in the top of the sixth.

Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) entered the game on the mound in the seventh inning and struck out two batters in two innings, while facing just six SwampDogs.

Shepherd drew a walk to begin the eighth inning and was pinch-ran for by Riley Campbell (University of Toledo). Allman then poked a single to left field. Both runners moved into scoring position on a SwampDogs passed ball. Delevie then singled off the pitchers glove to score Campbell to give the Marlins an insurance run, 5-3.

Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) made his 14th appearance out of the bullpen as he took over in the ninth inning and retired three hitters in order to notch his second save and secure the Marlins victory, 5-3.
