Marlins Offensive Sputters in Home Loss

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – For the first time this season the Morehead City Marlins (20-6) dropped back-to-back contests, falling to Wilmington (10-18) 1-0 at Big Rock Stadium.

Wilmington put the lone run on the board in the second inning after Paxton Wallace singled to the outfield and was brought into score on a Ben LaSpaluto single.

Breydan Gorham (UNC-Wilmington) made his second start of the summer for the Marlins. Gorham made his longest appearance so far, pitching five innings and only allowing four hits. The redshirt-sophomore struck out five Sharks in his outing.

In the sixth inning Mason Duke (University of Alabama) took over and tossed a perfect frame with one strikeout. Octavio Mirabal (King University) followed with another scoreless inning in the seventh.

Joe Mason (Pitt CC) pinch hit in the sixth inning and doubled off the left-centerfield wall. Mason came up for a second time in the eighth and singled and stole second.

Catcher Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) also notched two hits in the game, marking the second time he has had multiple hits in a game.

Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) held the Sharks at bay in the eighth and ninth frames. The senior struck out five-consecutive hitters to close his outing.

  • Morehead City improves to 20-6 overall and 12-3 record at home, remaining in first place of the CPL and in the East division.
  • When scoring two or fewer runs the Marlins are 1-6.
  • The Marlins are 1-1 when playing on Tuesday nights
  • Morehead City is now 5-3 against Wilmington this season.
