Wilmington, N.C. – Morehead City (20-6) dropped the first game of the second-half to Wilmington (8-18), 3-1, at Legion Stadium. The Marlins also began the first-half with a loss to Wilmington on the road and went on to win seven-straight games.
The Marlins got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Sammy Miller (Longwood) singled to the outfield for the second-consecutive game. Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) then took one to right-center field that was misplayed by the Sharks outfielder to put two runners aboard. Luke Shadid's (Bradley University) fielder's choice grounder moved Miller to third in the following at-bat. Brendan Dougherty's single brought in his 21st RBI and the first run in of the game.
Wilmington used three hits to add one run in the fifth inning to tie the game. The Sharks added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of two base hits, proving to be the difference in the game.
After notching four hits in the first three innings, the Marlins were limited to three singles in the remaining six frames.
Ashton Raines (Bloomsburg University) made his second start of the summer and tossed 4.2 innings. The junior didn't allow an earned run, while surrendering seven hits and striking out three Sharks.
Kenny Wells finished the fifth inning with a pop out and then shut Wilmington out in the sixth inning that included two strikeouts.
