MOREHEAD CITY. – The Morehead City Marlins (19-5) and Edenton Steamers (11-14) split Friday night's doubleheader at Big Rock Stadium. The Marlins secured the Coastal Plain League best win No. 19 of the summer in the back-end of the twinbill.
Game 1: Edenton 3, Morehead City 2.
Game 1 picked up in the bottom of the second after previously being suspended due to rain on Sunday June 24. The original seven inning contest nearly needed extra innings, but a walk-off from Edenton, the home team from the game on June 24, gave the Steamers their second win over Morehead City this summer.
Edenton score one run in the bottom of the second and another in the third to give them a 2-0 lead.
Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) led off the fifth with a single to right field and was moved over to second off a Craig Lewis (Seton Hill) ground ball. Luke Shadid (Bradley University) notched an infield single in the following at bat, Johnson took a wide turn around third and took home on the play to put the Marlins on the board, 2-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Danton Hyman (Newberry College) sent his sixth double of the season to the left-center field wall. Three consecutive free passes, two walks and a hit batter, would bring Hyman into score the game tying run.
Two hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning were enough to bring the winning run in for Edenton.
Game 2: Morehead City 5, Edenton 2.
Edenton struck first in the top of the fourth, as the visitors in game two, using a leadoff single to catapult the first run of the contests.
With the Steamers ahead 1-0, Morehead City capitalized off three lead off walks and a defensive blunder in the fifth. Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte), Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) and Lewis walked ahead of Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Cammarata. Lewis then scored on a wild pitch to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Pinch hitter Riley Campbell (University of Toledo) laced a single out to centerfield to bring in Shepherd and extend the Marlins lead.
Joe Mason (Pitt CC) and Cammarata each walked in the sixth inning and came around to score to cushion the Marlins lead, 5-2.
Mason Duke (University of Alabama) notched took over in the fifth inning and secured his third win of the summer, tying the team-most. Duke threw one inning, allowing just one run and striking out two.
Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) shut the door in the final two frames, notching his second save while not allowing a hit in appearance No. 12 of the summer.
