Marlins Split Doubleheader Against Wilmington

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – A night after clinching the First-Half Crown on Sunday the Morehead City Marlins (17-4) split a doubleheader with the Wilmington Sharks (7-14) at Big Rock Stadium.

Game 1

The Marlins used four different pitchers to earn the team's first shutout of the season, defeating the Sharks 1-0.

Mason Duke (Alabama) made the start and tossed four of the seven innings. The junior picked up his second win of the summer, allowing only four hits and striking out five in a scoreless outing.

Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte) launched his first homerun that cleared the Big Rock Stadium scoreboard in left-center field to give the Marlins the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) and Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) each threw an inning in relief and struck out one batter while not allowing a baserunner.

CPL Select Team nominee, Kenny Wells (Seton Hill), took over in the seventh inning notched one strikeout on his way to his league-best sixth save.

Game 2

The second contest wrote a different narrative, with a total 13 runs being scored between the two teams in an extra-inning affair.

The Marlins struck first after Danton Hyman (Newberry College) launched his fifth double of the season. A wild pitch from Wilmington moved Hyman to third and grounder to the right side from Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) scored the first run of the game.

The Sharks used three hits and a pair of walks in the top of the third inning to score four runs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Johnson singled and Joe Mason walked in his first at bat of Game 2. Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) fly out brought in Johnson to score. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College) single scored the second run of the inning to cut the lead to 4-3, in Wilmington's favor.

Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the seventh, Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) led off with a hard hit single. The ball would bounce off Wilmington's first baseman's glove, towards the second baseman who would over through first allowing Sechopoulos to move to second. Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Riley Campbell (Toledo) to third. Hyman's fly out to right field brought Campbell into score the tying run and force extra innings.

The Sharks added four runs in the first extra half-inning after the International Tiebreaker Rule came into effect. The Marlins added one run in the bottom of the eighth, but would fall 8-5 in the second game.
