Edenton, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (16-3) shellacked the Edenton Steamers (8-11) 19-4 en-route to clinching the organizations first-ever First Half Championship at Historic Hicks Field on Sunday night.
Game 1 began in the bottom of the second with Morehead City ahead 2-0, due to the suspended rained out game June 20. The lineup and starting pitcher stayed the same for the Marlins with Ashton Raines (Bloomsburg University) on the mound.
Raines picked up where he left off in what was his season debut to earn his victory of the summer. The junior delivered with 6.1 innings thrown, only allowing one earned run and striking three Steamers out.
Edenton would add one run back in the bottom of the third inning after a pair of single began the inning, giving the Marlins a 2-1 advantage.
The Morehead City offense burst onto the scene in the top of the fifth inning. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) notched his team-best 29th hit of the summer to start the inning. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) drew a walk in the ensuing at bat. Luke Shadid (Bradley University) then knocked a pitch down the left field line, bringing in Hyman to give the Marlins a two-run lead.
The offense wasn't done there, Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) drew one of the 14 walks recorded by Marlin hitters in the contest. Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) brought in two runners with a sharply hit grounder to the second. Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer University) blasted his third double in as many games. The lineup would hit around in the inning, with Hyman being hit by a pitch, before the frame came to a close with Morehead City ahead 8-1.
With one out in the top of the eighth inning Shadid blasted his first home run over the Hick's Field monster, the double-decker advertising boards atop of the left centerfield wall. The homerun marked the first off a left-handed pitcher for the Marlins this season.
After two walks in the same inning Hunter Shepherd (Catawba Valley) down the right field line and brought two more runs into score, pushing the lead to 11-1. Gordon's infield grounder brought Shepherd across the plate in the following at bat. The Steamer's pitching staff then surrendered two more walks. Mason's single to left field brought Hyman into score. Shadid came back up in the inning and forced a defensive error from Edenton's third baseman that brought a pair of runs into score to give the marlins a 13 run lead.
Sammy Miller (Longwood) made his season debut on the mound for Morehead City tossing the final two innings and recording a pair of strikeouts.
In the top of the ninth, Riley Campbell (Toledo) got the wheels back rolling with a double down the left field line. After Shepherd reached on a drop third strike, Jacob Greene (Emory University) sacrifice fly brought Campbell into score. Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) and Mason then drew walks to load the bases. Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) worked a walk that brought another Marlin run into score. Shadid reached on a fielder's error scoring Pimentel, before Johnson notched another RBI with a single to left field.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was called early due to lightening that was followed by rain that led to the game being suspended in the bottom of the second inning. The makeup date for for the remaining seven innings will be announced at a later date.
