MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – A trio of Morehead City Marlins were announced to the Coastal Plain League Select Team, according to a league announcement on Friday afternoon. Zach Keenan and Kenny Wells will join the 29-man roster that was put together by league coaches, league officials and Major League scouts. Second-year head coach Jesse Lancaster join the squad's staff as the top assistant coach.
The CPL Select Team will face off with the USA Collegiate National Team on Wednesday, June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
"I'd like to congratulate both Zach Keenan & Kenny Wells on their selections to the CPL select team to play against team USA," said head coach Jesse Lancaster "Several other Marlins were deserving of this recognition & opportunity, but we know Zach & Kenny will represent us well. I am honored to represent Morehead City as a coach for the CPL select team."
Keenan has made four appearances so far on the mound this summer, including three starts. The freshman holds a 2-0 record and a .047 ERA in 19 innings pitched. The Suwanee, Georgia native has struck out a team-high 21 batters.
Wells has made seven appearances out of the bullpen this season and has been tabbed as one of the best closers in the league. In 7.2 innings thrown the sophomore has notched 17 strikeout, while not allowing a run. A native of Lodi, Ohio, Wells has only allowed four baserunners, two via hits and two walks. The Seton Hill Griffin is tied as the CPL leader with five saves and has also posted a 1-0 record. Wells was awarded the CPL Pitcher of The Week award on June 10.
Lancaster, who has guided the Marlins to the best record in the CPL through 18 games, will be the top assistant for the Select Team. An assistant coach at the University of Mount Olive, Lancaster has spent ample time this summer working with Morehead City's pitching staff that holds a league-best 2.12 earned run average.
