Marlins First To 15 Wins In The CPL

Wilmington, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (15-3) secured win No. 15 of the season against the Wilmington Sharks (6-13) with a 5-1 final score at Legion Stadium.

The win dropped the Marlins magic number to just one to clinch the East Division and a Petit Cup Playoff berth. With Saturday's contest also finishing ahead of the Savannah Bananas win Morehead City has become the first of 16 teams in the Coastal Plain League to reach the 15 win mark.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (Mercer University) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched into the seventh inning without surrendering a run. His final line boasted an eight strikeout performance, while only allowing four hits and a lone walk.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Marlins struck first. Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte) laced a single back up the middle with one out. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) took a pitch the opposite way to right field and came into second with his third double of the summer. Hunter Shepherd (Catawba Valley) pop fly to right field was deep enough to score Cammarata as the first run of the game.

Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) began the fifth inning with a single over the second baseman's head. Riley Campbell (Toledo) and Danton Hyman (Newberry College) both laid down consecutive bunt singles. Hyman's bunt was fielded by the Sharks pitcher who made an error on the play, allowing Pimentel to score and making it 2-0 Morehead City. Joe Mason's (Pitt CC) ground ball in the infield brought in Campbell to score to extend it to a three-run lead.

In the seventh inning Riley Campbell was hit by a pitch for the fifth time this season. Hyman then singled to left field in the following at bat. Mason's fly out to right field was deep enough to bring the speedy Campbell into score from third. Brendan Dougherty (Bradley) drove a single out to center field to bring in his team-best 13th RBI of the summer and give the Marlins a 5-0 advantage.
