Marlins Inch Closer To First-Half Crown in Win Over Fayetteville

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (14-3) nearly shutout the Fayetteville SwampDogs (7-10), in a 5-1 victory, to reclaim the overall No. 1 spot in the Coastal Plain League standings. The Marlins magic number is now two, with nine games remaining in the first half of the season.

The Marlins went deep into the bullpen in Friday night's win, throwing seven different pitchers. Zach Keenan (Middle Tennessee) made his third start of the summer. The Blue Raider freshman threw four innngs, only allowing two hits and striking out three.

In the bottom of the third inning Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) and William Mapes (North Georgia) walked to start the inning. Danton Hyman (Newberry College) laid down a bunt to the third baseman and reached safely to load the bases. Morehead City native Joe Mason (Pitt CC) then laced a single to left field to bring in two runners and advanced to second on the throw home. Luke Shadid (Bradley University) then reached base as the SwampDogs second baseman couldn't handle the grounder and brought in Hyman to score the third run of the contest. Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) reached base on a fielder's choice which brought home his team-best 12th RBI to extend the lead to 4-0.

Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) took over on the mound in the fifth and struck two SwampDogs out in the frame. The junior is credited with his second win of the season.

Dougherty began the offensive eighth inning with a leadoff walk and was moved over to second as Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte) drew a walk in the following at bat. Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) moved Dougherty to third with a long fly-out to centerfield. A wild pitch with two outs in the innings allowed Dougherty to score, pushing the Marlins lead to 5-0.

The SwampDogs made a late push in the ninth inning after their leadoff man was hit by a pitch and came around to score off a double to cut the lead to four runs. Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) came on with one out away and recorded two strikeouts to end the game.

The Marlins are now seven games ahead in the East division and hold the best overall record.
