Marlins Fall To Edenton In First Home Loss

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (11-3) fell to the Edenton Steamers (4-10) 5-2 on Sunday night at Big Rock Stadium.

Luke Shadid (Bradley University) cracked his second double of the season off the base of the wall in the bottom of the second. Ari Sechopoulos then grounded out to the right side, allowing Shadid to advance to third. A wild pitch in the ensuing at bat from Miller brought the first run into score, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth Anthony Warneke singled up the middle for the Steamers. Two more hits moved him around to score and tie the game at one. Joe Mason (Pitt CC) launched a solo home run over the left field wall for his first homer of the season, giving the Marlins the 2-1 lead after four.

In the next offensive frame a pair of doubles, a single and a walk scored two more runs for Edenton that would give them their first lead of the game at 3-2. The Steamers added another pair of runs in the sixth when Bryson Worrell homered to make it a 5-2 score, in favor of Edenton.

Austin Dickey (Louisville) took over in the sixth inning and would retire the five hitters he faced of the summer. The sophomore didn't surrender a run or hit in 2.2 innings pitched, while striking out one.

Zach Barnes (East Carolina) came on in the ninth and held the Steamers hitless with a pair of pop outs and a strikeout.
