Marlins Use Late Rally To Secure 8-3 Win at Fayetteville

Fayetteville, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (9-2) offense came alive late to secure the 8-3 win in Thursday night's contest against Fayetteville (4-6) at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Hunter Shepherd (Catawba Valley) knocked a two-run homerun off the right field scoreboard in the top of the second inning to put the Marlins ahead early, 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning the SwampDogs struck back and recorded their first two hits in the contest, resulting in one run and cutting the lead to 2-1.

Octavio Mirabal (King University) made his third start of the season for Morehead City, pitching into the fifth inning. The senior only allowed three hits and one earned run, striking out three of the 18 hitters he faced.

Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) took over on the mound in the fifth inning and used two-pitches to get out of the inning in his fourth appearance of the summer. After a leadoff hit in the following inning, Moser notched a ground out and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning and hold the score at 2-1. The senior earned his first victory of the season in his two innings of work.

Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) then tossed just 10 pitches to set Fayetteville down in order, after coming on in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) poked a single to left center field to bring home Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) from second and extend the Marlin lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, a two-out triple and single from the SwampDogs brought in their second run of the game, cutting Morehead City's lead back to one, 3-2. Marklund then struck out the Fayetteville hitter to end the inning with two runners left on face.

Dominick Cammarata (UNC-Charlotte) led off the ninth inning with a single up the middle. Luke Shadid (Bradley University) was then hit by a pitch and Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) , who came on as a pinch hitter, walked on four pitches.

A wild pitch in the same inning scored Cammarata to double the lead, 4-2. Danton Hyman drove down the first base line, scoring two runs on his fourth double of the season to push the lead to 6-2. Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) laced a single to right field that tacked on two more runs to make the score 8-2 in the Marlins favor. Dougherty now has a team-high nine RBI.

Tommy Green (Longwood) came on to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth and recorded a strikeout to secure the Marlins league-best ninth win of the 2018 summer.
