Marlins Tie Best Start In History with Fifth-Straight Win

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (5-1) became the first team this summer in the Coastal Plain League to reach the five-win mark. The Marlins knocked off the Wilson Tobs (2-3) for the second night in a row by a final score of 5-3 from Big Rock Stadium.

Evan Lumbert (Florida Gulf Coast) made his first start of the summer, pitching four complete innings.  The junior allowed only two hits and three runs, only one earned.

The Marlins scored first for the second-consecutive night after Joe Mason (Pitt CC) reached base on an error by the Tob's third baseman to lead off the second inning. Dominick Cammarata then poked a single to right field. A wild pitch then allowed Mason to score the first run of the game. Chaston Gordon (Pfeiffer) knocked a single out to right field, allowing Cammarata to score from third, pushing the Marlins lead to 2-0.

In the third inning, Wilson's Drew Brooks fly out to left field was deep enough to bring home Dudley Taw, who was tagging up from third, into score and cut the lead down to one.

A hard hit ground ball from the Tobs in the fourth inning forced a Marlin defensive error, allowing Antwuan Tucker to score. Caleb Dean then doubled off the left field wall, bringing Steven Zimmerman into score. The two runs gave Wilson the lead, 3-2 through four innings.

Garrett Letchworth (High Point) took over on the mound for Morehead City in the fifth inning and only allowed one hit in two innings of work. The sophomore would earn his second- consecutive win out of the bullpen.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Sechopoulos and Gordon led off with back-to-back singles to the right side. A sacrifice bunt from William Mapes (North Georgia) moved both of the runners into scoring position. An ensuing wild pitch allowed Sechopoulos to score from third, tying the game at 3-3.

In the following inning, Brendan Dougherty (Bradley University) blasted his second home run of the summer over the right field wall, giving the Marlins a 4-3 lead.

After a 40-minute rain delay, Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) scored on a passed ball, adding the insurance run, stretching the Morehead City lead to 5-3 heading to the final frame.

Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) sat down the final three Wilson hitters, forcing and a ground out and two strike outs in the ninth, earning his third save of the summer.
