Marlins Squash Salamanders in Extra Innings For Third-Straight Win

Holly Springs, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (3-1) notched a 7-4 extra-inning over the Holly Spring Salamanders (1-3) at Ting Park, claiming their third-consecutive victory.

Zack Mathes (St. Andrews) worked through three innings in his first start on the mound this summer. After allowing one run in each of the first two innings the redshirt-junior worked out of a bases loaded jam, forcing a double-play and ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning Riley Campbell (Toledo) was hit by a pitch for the first of two times in the game. The redshirt sophomore stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly out from Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky). Danton Hyman's (Newberry College) swinging bunt brought in Campbell for the Marlin's first run of the game, cutting the Salamanders lead to 2-1.

Joe Mason (Pitt CC) laid a dribbler down the third base line in the top of fourth inning and came into score the tying run two batters later on an Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) double to right center field.

Dawson Moser (Arkansas-Monticello) made his first appearance of the summer as he struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moser would work through two frames, holding the Salamanders at bay, not allowing a hit and striking out four.

In the top of the sixth inning Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) smashed a fastball high over the right field fence for his first home run of the year, giving the Marlins their first lead of the game, 4-2.

The Salamanders struck back in the bottom of the ninth inning with back-to-back doubles by Carter Williams and CJ White to cut the Morehead City lead to one. Jack Goertzen then tripled to center field, bringing home the game-tying run.

For the first time this season the newly installed International Tiebreaker rule came into effect in the extra innings. With the rule allowing the previous two players in the lineup, ahead of the leadoff hitter, to begin the inning at second and first, respectively.

To begin the first extra frame of the season Johnson laid down a bunt to the right side that was fielded by the first baseman, who tried to get the Marlin's lead the runner at third, but overthrew it and permitted Bryce Delevie (Columbus State), the runner placed on second to begin the inning, to score and reclaim Morehead City's lead, 5-4.

William Mapes (North Georgia) the runner placed on first to begin the frame advanced to third on the play, while Johnson was credited with a single and moved over to second. A wild pitch off the end of the catcher's glove brought Mapes into score and extended the Marlins lead back to two. Brendan Dougherty's (Bradley) grounder to the second baseman was enough to bring in the third run of the inning and give the Marlins a 7-4 lead.

Holly Springs would also begin their half of the extra inning with two runners on base.  Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) came on to begin the 10th and caught the Salamanders lead runner stealing, which was scored 1-6-5. Wells retired the next two hitters to earn his second save of the year and the third-consecutive Marlin's win.
