Pitching Powers Marlins Past Wilmington in Home Opener

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (1-1) pitching staff recorded 18 of the possible 27 outs via the strikeout on Friday night to secure the first win of the season, 4-1 over Wilmington (1-1).

Marlin's starter Perry DellaValle (Seton Hill) made his summer debut on the mound, sitting the first 11 Wilmington hitters down in order. After striking out eight hitters in the first 3.2 innings of work, a pair of two-out walks and a double from Wilmington's Joe Gruszka scored the first run of the game.

Mason Duke (Alabama) took over for DellaValle in the sixth inning and recorded the final out of the frame and is credited with the win.

A leadoff double by Morehead City native Joe Mason put the Marlin's right back into striking distance in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Ari Sechopoulos (College of Charleston) then put the ball in play, moving Mason over to third base. Alex Pimentel (Southwestern Oklahoma) grounded out to third, but a good read from Mason allowed him to score on the play, tying the game at 1-1 through four innings.

Brendan Dougherty (Bradley College) notched two hits in the game, including a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning. The homerun gave Morehead City their first lead of the season, 2-1.

Sechopoulos led off the bottom of the eighth by drawing a walk and then stealing second base during the next at bat. With two outs, Bryce Delevie (Columbus State) walked, placing two Marlins on base. A wild pitch from Wilmington reliever Keith Gabrielson allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. A second wild pitch brought Sechopoulos into score, giving the Marlins a 3-1 advantage. An RBI single from Danton Hyman (Newberry College) that deflected off the first baseman scored Delevie from third, pushing the lead to 4-1 heading into the ninth inning.

Kenny Wells earned the six-out save, striking out five of the six batters he faced in the final two frames.
