Wilmington, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins (0-1) fell to the Wilmington Sharks (1-0) in the season opener on the road at Buck Hardee Field.
Returning Marlin, Octavio Mirabal (King University) held the Sharks to just one hit through the first five innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, after recording the first out, Wilmington was able to notch back-to-back hits from Kevon Perkins and Wil Hoyle. Ben Anderson then recorded a sacrifice fly that brought home the first run of the game. Ayden Karraker's single to the left side scored the second run of the inning, giving the Sharks a 2-0 advantage. Morehead City's Brandon Marklund (Bryan College) came on in place of Mirabal in the sixth and left two Shark runners stranded.
With one out in the top of the eighth inning the Marlins rally began with Riley Campbell (Toledo) being hit by a pitch. Will Johnson (Eastern Kentucky) then reached base on an infield error that moved Campbell to second base. With two runners on base, Danton Hyman (Newberry College) reached safely on a bunt single followed by an error on the Shark's pitcher scored Campbell and advanced Johnson to third. An ensuing balk from the Wilmington reliever, Eddie Hiott, plated Johnson and tied the game at two heading into the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Perkins doubled to right field to lead off the inning for the Sharks. An error on the Marlin's defense allowed Perkins to score the go ahead run for Wilmington.
Mirabal finished the night with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just four hits and two runs. The senior struck out three of the 20 batters he faced in his season debut. Marklund threw 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and one run. The Canadian born pitcher fanned three of the 10 hitters he saw.
Hyman was tied as the game-leader for hits with two, while also stealing two bases for the Marlins.
