Edenton, N.C. - - - The opening game of the second half of the season between the Morehead City Marlins and Edenton Steamers was suspended due to lightning in the area Sunday evening. Tonight's contest will be made up on July 18 at Historic Hicks Field with the Marlins leading by a score of 3-2 entering the top of the fifth inning.
Marlins left-handed pitcher Heath Mitchem (Catawba) took the mound against Edenton starting righty John Arel (Univ. of Maine) with Arel tossing a perfect game through the first three innings of play.
Edenton struck first in the home half of the third inning on a two-run homer from Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) to give the Steamers an early 2-0 advantage. Morehead City answered quickly in the top frame of the fourth inning on a two-run shot from Daulton Weeks (USC Aiken) to knot the score up at 2-2.
In the next at bat, CPL All-Star Nick Podkul (Notre Dame) drilled the go-ahead solo home run to put the Marlins in front 3-2 on his sixth bomb of the 2017 campaign. The contest was soon stopped by a lightning delay at the conclusion of the fourth inning.
The Morehead City Marlins host the Wilmington Sharks tomorrow night from Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium as we hold an early Fourth of July celebration at the ballpark. First pitch is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start. Listen to the game live on the CPL Webpass with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m.
