Fish bounce back in 4-1 triumph at Wilson

Wilson, N.C. - - - The Morehead City Marlins lefty pitching combination of Heath Mitchem (Catawba) and Quinton Driggers (Newberry) powered the visiting Marlins to a crucial 4-1 victory over the host Wilson Tobs from Historic Fleming Stadium Sunday evening. The duo tossed a complete nine innings of work, combining for no earned runs allowed on six hits and two strikeouts. 

Morehead City improves to 12-11 overall, while Wilson falls to 6-15. The Marlins conclude their brief two-game road trip tomorrow evening when they travel to Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium to face the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start with live play-by-play updates provided via Twitter (@mhcmarlins). 

MHC first baseman Will Matthiessen (Stanford) topped the Marlins offensive charts, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Center fielder Alec Wilson (Stanford) went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while third baseman Nick Podkul (Notre Dame) was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. 

For Wilson, catcher Zach Smith (UNC Charlotte) led the Tob bats with a 2-for-3 performance. First baseman Shane Shepard (NC State) went 1-for-3 with one run scored, while third baseman Chad Frazier (Concord) and designated hitter Carson McCurdy (Mount Olive) each contributed a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. 

The Marlins offense struck first in the opening frame with back-to-back singles from Podkul and designated hitter Sammy Miller (Longwood) followed by a two-run single from Matthiessen to give Morehead City an early 2-0 advantage. The Marlins stretched the lead out to 3-0 in the top of the third inning when Podkul scored on a ground out from second baseman Steven Taylor (Mercer). 

Wilson got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning after Shepard scored on an error after a single from Frazier to cut the deficit down to 4-1. Driggers soon entered the game in the top of the eighth inning to record the six-out save, securing the victory for Morehead City. 

Mitchem tallied his second win on the mound, improving to 2-2. Wilson starting left-handed pitcher Cody Smith (Chowan) took the loss, falling to 0-4. Mitchem posted seven innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits and held the Tobs scoreless through the first six frames. Driggers earned his third save of the 2017 campaign, tossing two scoreless innings in relief. 

The Marlins return home to the friendly confines of Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Tuesday night, hosting the Wilson Tobs for a 7:05 p.m. start. The contest can be heard live on the CPL Web Pass with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:55 p.m. Morehead City then hits the road to J.P. Riddle Stadium Wednesday evening for a crucial east division match-up versus the Fayetteville SwampDogs heading into the off-day on Thursday. First pitch is slated foe 7:05 p.m.
