Edenton Steams Away, Marlins Lose Fourth Straight

Morehead City -- After another tough loss for the Marlins, they came back home Friday night trying to get their first win of the season. Their quest for win number one will continue as they lost their fourth straight in a 5-3 decision to Edenton.

The Steamers struck in the first inning when James Battley hit an RBI ground out to drive in Connor Kopach to take a 1-0 lead.

The Marlins would respond in the third when Joe Mason (Wingate) drove in Kendall Ford (Georgia State) for the tying run.

The Steamers would respond in the fourth by plating four straight runs to chase Marlins starter, Heath Michem (Catawba). They reclaimed the lead when James Battley hit a solo home run to left field to make the score 2-1. Then RBI's coming from Nate Gardner and Tyler Burns to grab a 5-1 lead. The Marlins would chip away at the lead in the fourth and fifth innings. They got one run across in the fourth when catcher, Mark Castellucci (Montevallo) grounded into a double play. Then in the fifth, Wesley Weeks (North Florida) drove in Sammy Miller (Longwood) to make the score 5-3. Lander University teammates, Marshall Thompson and Joseph Whitt combined to allow only one hit and no runs out of the bullpen.

Edenton pitchers Cody Maw and Sean Hughes did a stellar job keeping the Marlins off the scoreboard in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The Marlins loaded the bases in the seventh, but Cody Maw got Daulton Weeks (South Carolina-Aiken) to pop out to centerfield to end the threat. For the whole game, the Marlins stranded a total of nine runners. In the bottom of the ninth, Morehead City couldn't get anybody on base as Carmen Giampetruzzi sent them down in order to preserve the Edenton victory. The Marlins travel to Holly Springs to take on the Salamanders. The game begins at 7:05 and can be heard on the CPL Webpass.
