Marlins Start Strong But Falter For Third Straight Loss

WILSON, N.C.—The Morehead City Marlins (18-24, 7-9) took advantage of an early Tobs mistake, but couldn't close the door in a tough 5-1 loss on Thursday night at Fleming Stadium. After going hitless in each of the first two innings, Chase Stafford (Oral Roberts) provided some life with a leadoff infield single in the third inning.

The Marlins would take an early 1-0 lead in a game headlined with unconventional scoring as Stafford came along to score on a two-out wild pitch. Andrew Burnick (Penn) pitched six solid innings of work giving up just three hits while striking out six. Thursday night was Burnick's third start of the season against the Wilson Tobs, now lasting 15.2 innings in three starts striking out 20 batters. Leading 1-0 heading into the 7th, the Tobs rallied for two vital runs against relievers Luke Bolka (ECU) and Dean Loucka

Bolka, the CPL All-Star, was the first man out of the pen walking three batters while hitting another. Unfortunately those mistakes came back to cost the Marlins as Andrew Webster scored on a wild pitch from Bolka tying things up at one in the frame. Then when Dean Loucka (Felician College) entered out of the bullpen, following his first strikeout, a two-out past ball gave the Tobs their first and only lead of the night, 2-1.

The Tobs would then add on as Loucka walked in a run with the bases loaded during the 8th inning. Zach Reid (Tennessee) then allowed the first and only RBI base hit of the night after coming in out of relief. Trailing 5-1 with the bases still loaded, Noah Cummings (Oral Roberts) made an incredible running catch up near the RCF wall keeping the score within striking distance heading into the final inning. The Marlins offense, which recorded just two hits on the night, was unable to mount any significant rally.

Thursday night's loss was now the second in three games where the Marlins held the lead after six innings, this after winning each of their last six games including two victories over the Wilson Tobs. Heading into Friday night's matchup, the Marlins are 3-3 against the Tobs jostling for 5th place in the East Division. The Oral Roberts teammates (Cummings and Stafford) recorded the lone hits on the night for the Marlins, stranding four runners on base. While Aaron Wilson (Hartford) ended his nine game hitting streak, the leadoff hitter reached base with three walks on the night.

Your Marlins look to bounce back quickly as they return to Fleming Stadium on Friday night for the second straight meeting with the Tobs, their final matchup of the season.
