Marlins Edged By Pilots 13-4

MOREHEAD CITY—The Morehead City Marlins (18-23, 7-8) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but could not contain the Peninsula Pilots opportunistic bats in a tough 13-4 loss on Tuesday night at Big Rock Stadium.

Aaron Wilson (Hartford) kicked off the festivities with a leadoff homerun, his first of the season, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Matt Collins (Texas A&M) followed right thereafter with a double off the wall, scoring the Marlins second run of the night on a RBI single from Logan Sherer. The UNC Charlotte product collected his 10th multi-hit game of the year while closing out the night pitching his second inning of the season.

Jose Rendon (Sterling College) pitched 6.2 innings in his second start with the Marlins, giving his team a chance to win as the game was tied, 4-4, heading into the 7th inning. Rendon eventually took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, while striking out seven. The Pilots added on in a big way in what ended a eight-run 7th inning scoring all of their runs with two outs in the frame. John Holland (Felician College) was unable to record an out, then Keller Bradford pitched the next 1.1 innings of relief. The Pilots took advantage of two costly mistakes, along with producing four straight two-out base hits.

After initially trailing 4-2 in the second inning, Rendon retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced allowing just a single in the 3rd inning. The Marlins offense pieced together a rally in front of 1,500 fans on HotDog Hundo night as Logan Sherer delivered a clutch two-out single driving in Matt Collins, who also recorded his fourth triple on the year. The Marlins would eventually tie the game as Wilson delivered an RBI groundout with the bases loaded but the offense unfortunately could not take the lead in that frame after loading the bags with nobody out, dropping to 0-4 against the Pilots this season. Productivity centered around the middle infield, who happened to bat consecutively in the order from nine-hole to leadoff man. Justin Weigle (Ouachita Baptist) recorded a base hit in the 6th inning, giving the starting shortstop hits in seven of his last eight games overall while Wilson recorded two RBI's in the losing effort.

Following their second-straight loss, the Marlins enter a scheduled off day before diving into the final stretch of the season featuring 13 games over the last 12 calendar days. The Marlins next game will take place on Thursday night with back-to-back outings facing the Wilson Tobs as part of an important five game road trip.
