Justin Weigle (Ouachita Baptist) has been named Morehead City's Big Rock Performer of the Week for the week of games starting July 13th.
After the dust settled from a week that saw the Marlins go 5-0 and extend their season long winning streak to six games, Weigle stood at the top of a long list of candidates for performer of the week standing out from the No. 9 spot in the order. The switch-hitting infielder went 6-15 (.400) with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 RBI and 6 runs scored. His outstanding week increased his batting average to .271 along with yearly totals to 4 doubles, 1 triple, 7 RBI and 11 runs scored in 15 games.
In the first game after the All-Star break, Weigle went 2-4 including an RBI triple in the bottom of the 6th inning that broke a 2-2 tie against Wilmington. He followed that up against the Wilson Tobs going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored off a steal of home plate in what may have been the most exciting moment of the Marlins season thus far.
On July 16th against Lexington County, Weigle recorded 1 hit and 2 walks in 4 plate appearances. His one hit sparked a 2-run 8th inning, which gave the Marlins a 7-5 win. The next night, Weigle continued his hot streak going 1-3 with 2 runs scored and another walk in a Marlins 5-4 win at Wilmington. Then, despite failing to record a hit in the Marlins July 18th contest against Wilson, Weigle again played difference maker. He drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 7th giving the Marlins a 2-1 win to close out the week undefeated.
Weigle attends Ouachita Baptist University (D-II) where he hit .338 with 14 doubles, 4 triples, 5 homeruns, 32 RBI and 41 runs scored over the course of his 41 game sophomore season. He was a First-Team All-Great American Conference selection for the Tigers and the only sophomore named to the First-Team.
