FLORENCE, S.C.—Three members of the Morehead City Marlins: Luke Bolka, Zach Reid and Stephen Wallace took center stage during the 2015 Coastal Plain League All-Star Weekend. For Wallace, his shining moment came on Sunday night during the Home Run Derby where the Mt. Olive product finished second in the East Division, just one homerun behind the eventual champion, GK Young from Petersburg, serving as the grand finale to the All-Star Fan Fest hosted by the Florence RedWolves.
Hitting batting practice from his coach, Courtney Spitz, Wallace mashed one home run and nailed another two off the 400-foot center field wall during his first round of action. Wallace did not record a home run during his second run, and unfortunately was unable to participate in the All-Star Game after suffering an injury during the Scouting Combine on Monday. Wallace currently is tied for the league lead in homeruns (10), leading the Marlins in total HR's, BB's (17) and RBI's (22) on the season.
Zach Reid, the LHP from Tennessee, came out of the bullpen for the East Division during the 6th inning of the CPL All-Star Game. Reid pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one while allowing two hits in the frame, preserving a 4-1 lead for the East Squad at that point. Reid was one of three Marlins that played in front of their family this weekend in Florence, S.C. To this point in the season, Reid leads the Marlins in total appearances (15), posting a solid 2.45 ERA as both starter and an effective back-end reliever.
Had a great time participating in the @CPLBaseball all star game. Ready to get back to Morehead and string together some wins!— Zach Reid (@zachreid32) July 14, 2015
Luke Bolka, the DH/Utility selection, lived up to that mantra going 1-2 at the plate as the starting designated hitter while also pitching an inning out of the bullpen for the East Division. Bolka entered in the 8th in what was eventually decided the final inning of the rain-delayed contest. The East Carolina product singled back up the middle in his second at bat, that after popping out earlier in the game. In all, the Marlins each made their presence felt in the 2015 CPL All-Star Weekend one way or another. Bolka enters the post-All-Star break hitting .315 on the season with a team-high seven doubles.
Among the many All-Star Weekend festivities, players and coaches got the opportunity to ride around Darlington International Speedway on Monday before taking part in the annual CPL Luncheon featuring a guest speaker series with four-time Gold Glove winner Orlando Hudson. The Marlins (13-21, 2-6) return to action on Tuesday night traveling to face the Wilmington Sharks before two-straight home games beginning with a Wednesday night contest versus the Wilson Tobs.
