Three Marlins Selected For The 2015 CPL All-Star Game

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C.---A trio of talented Marlins: Luke Bolka (ECU), Zach Reid (Tennessee) and Stephen Wallace (Mt. Olive) have been selected to participate in the 2015 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game, which will take place in Florence, S.C. from July 12-13. Matt Collins (Texas A&M) was also nominated for the CPL Final Vote, which was determined by fan submissions, but finished third overall in the ballot and unfortunately did not qualify.

First and foremost, Luke Bolka (ECU) has jumped out to an impressive start for the Marlins leading the team in batting average with a .323 clip on the season along with a team-high seven doubles. After beign named to the CPL Select Team vs. Collegiate Team USA, Bolka will serve as a DH/Utility player for the East Division as he also pitched two innings this season. Now in terms of production, Stephen Wallace blaseted his way into the CPL All-Star Game as DH/Utility player for the East Division. Wallace is currently second in the CPL in home runs (9) and slugging percentage (.614) on the season. In fact, Wallace leads the Marlins home runs and RBI's on the year (21) while also first in walks (14), strikeouts (44) and tied for the most triples. Zach Reid, the Marlins lone pitcher selected, has been a reliable force both in the bullpen as a set up man, closer and effective starter. The left hander from the University of Tennessee boasts a 2.22 ERA over 13 appearances, the most of any Marlins pitcher. Reid is second on the team with two saves and has struck out 19 batters over his 24 innings of work pitching in a variety of roles for the club.

Celebrating its 19th season in 2015, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 79 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
