Clyde King to serve as Marlins guest manager


MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins announced Tuesday that former New York Yankees manager Clyde King will serve as a guest head coach for the team’s Jul. 30 game against the Florence RedWolves at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

A native of Goldsboro, N.C., King recently retired after more than 60 years working in professional baseball as a player, coach and executive. He is best known for his role with the New York Yankees, for whom he worked as a pitching coach, general manager, and special advisor. He also managed the team during the 1982 season.

Before moving into the coaching ranks, King pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds between 1944 and 1953. He then spent several years managing minor league clubs, making the leap to the major league level as manager of the San Francisco Giants from 1969-70. He also managed the Atlanta Braves from 1974-75.

King recently served as the keynote speaker at the Coastal Plain League’s 2010 All-Star Luncheon in Forest City, N.C.

The Morehead City Marlins are the newest member of the Coastal Plain League. The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
