2010: Season in Review

The following is a compilation of facts, figures and notable moments from the Morehead City Marlins inaugural 2010 season, in which they finished 34-20, earning the No. 3 seed in the Petitt Cup. The team put together a league-best 19-7 mark during the second half, the best winning percentage for any team in the league in either half.

Marlins eliminated by Steamers

EDENTON, N.C. – After winning Friday’s resumed game, the Morehead City Marlins fell to the Edenton Steamers, 7-0, at Historic Hicks Field in the decisive third game of the first round of their Petitt Cup series.

Marlins and Steamers suspended in eighth

EDENTON, N.C. – A downpour forced the suspension of the Morehead City Marlins’ playoff game against the Edenton Steamers at Historic Hicks Field on Thursday night. When play was stopped, Morehead City reliever Thomas Girdwood had begun to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning.

Quintero signs with Astros

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Former Morehead City Marlin Rodney Quintero has signed a minor-league contract with the Houston Astros organization. The Astros selected Quintero in the 25th round of the 2010 First-Year Player draft in June.

Marlins topped by steamers in extras, 4-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Peter Barrows scored the go-ahead wild pitch in the top of the 12th inning and the Edenton Steamers held on from there, defeating the Morehead City Marlins, 4-3, on Wednesday night at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in game one of the first round of the Petitt Cup.

Thomas Girdwood relieved Ryan Smith with runners on second and third and none out in a 3-3 game in  the 12th.

FLORENCE, S.C. – After the Morehead City Marlins wrapped up the second-half South Division title with a win in game one of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader, rain moved into the Florence area and forced the postponement of game two.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Marlins clinch second-half division title

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Morehead City Marlins entered Saturday’s doubleheader in Florence needing just one win to clinch the second-half South Division title. A complete-game effort from Brad McAllister and a big top of the third inning gave the Marlins that victory as they defeated the RedWolves 7-1 at American Legion Field.

Ciraco's walk-off single leads Marlins past Florence

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins and Florence RedWolves met for the first of four times in a three-day span on Friday night. On a night when former Yankee executive Clyde King made his Coastal Plain League managerial debut, Matt Ciraco’s 11th-inning, walk-off single lifted the Marlins to a 5-4 victory in front of 1,918 at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Clyde King to serve as Marlins guest manager

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins announced Tuesday that former New York Yankees manager Clyde King will serve as a guest head coach for the team’s Jul. 30 game against the Florence RedWolves at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Marlins stay dry, beat Columbia 9-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After weather forced the postponement or cancellation of three games in the last two days, the Morehead City Marlins and Columbia Blowfish played an uninterrupted game Wednesday night. Brent Powers earned his team-high seventh win as a seven-run fifth inning carried the Marlins to a 9-3 victory at Capital City Stadium.

Marlins rained out in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Following a weather delay of nearly three hours, Wednesday’s doubleheader between the Morehead City Marlins and Fayetteville SwampDogs has been cancelled due to lightning in the area as well as poor field conditions. The teams were scheduled to play two seven-inning games.

Marlins beaten by RedWolves, 7-2

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Florence RedWolves broke open a tie game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, defeating the Morehead City Marlins, 7-2, at American Legion Field on Tuesday night.

Morehead City (28-19, 13-6 second half) had tied the game in the top of the inning.

Sclafani named Player of the Week

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League announced Tuesday that Morehead City Marlins infielder Joe Sclafani has been named Rawlings Player of the Week for Week 8, comprising the period of Jul. 21-25.

Sharks' late runs doom Marlins, 3-2

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins were unable to hang on to an eighth-inning lead and then could not get the tying run home from third in the top of the ninth, falling 3-2 to the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field on Monday Night.

With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth, Thomas Girdwood walked pinch-hitter Joey Rapp with the bases loaded to put Wilmington (21-26, 8-11 second half) ahead, 3-2.

Marlins pound SwampDogs, 13-2

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Shawn Armstrong only needed three runs of support in Sunday’s game at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium. His teammates gave him more than that, as four different Morehead City Marlins homered in their 13-2 win over the Fayetteville SwampDogs.

Marlins defeat Sharks in extras, 3-2

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Joe Sclafani scored on a wild pitch to break an extra-inning tie as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Wilmington Sharks, 3-2, at Buck Hardee Field on Friday night.

Zach Borenstein stood at the plate with two out in the top of the tenth when Patrick Mincey’s (L, 1-3) wild pitch allowed Sclafani to score from third, giving Morehead City (27-16, 12-3) their first lead of the game.

Marlins dispatch Pilots for sixth straight win

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Carrying a five-game win streak into Thursday night’s game, the Morehead City Marlins emerged from the All-Star Break the same way they entered it. A balanced offensive attack and another solid pitching performance from Brent Powers allowed the Marlins to defeat the Peninsula Pilots 6-3 in front of 1,830 at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Four Marlins appear in 2010 CPL All-Star Game

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Four Morehead City Marlins represented their team in the 2010 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game. Brad McAllister’s National team defeated the American team – for which Ben White, Steve Marino and Justyn Carter appeared – 5-4 in Tuesday’s contest at McNair Field in Forest City, N.

Marlins to hold 'Bark In The Park'

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins will team up with PAWS of Carteret to host ‘Bark In The Park’ for Thursday’s game against the Peninsula Pilots at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Marlins take down Grizzlies for fifth straight win

GASTONIA, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins did not hit a home run through the first four games of their current win streak. But that changed on Saturday against the Gastonia Grizzlies, as two home runs – and a dominant performance by Shawn Armstrong – carried the Marlins to an 8-3 win at Sims Legion Park.

FOREST CITY, N.C. – On Friday, the Morehead City Marlins took on the West Division’s first-place team for the second night in a row. And as they did on Thursday against Martinsville, the Marlins came away with a win as they defeated the Forest City Owls at McNair Field, 5-2.

Mustangs' miscues lead to Marlins' 7-3 win

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Martinsville Mustangs had more than twice as many hits as the Morehead City Marlins at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Thursday night. But the Marlins took advantage of five Mustang errors and benefitted from a collaborative bullpen effort as they beat Martinsville, 7-3.

Marlins win second straight, 5-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a tight game from the first pitch at Capital City Stadium to the last, the Morehead City Marlins never trailed. Luke Smierciak scored the eventual winning run on a passed ball and Thomas Girdwood earned his second save in as many nights as the Marlins beat the Columbia Blowfish, 5-3, on Wednesday night.

McAllister named National All-Star starter

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League released the National team roster for the 2010 CPL All-Star game on Wednesday, and Morehead City Marlins right-hander Brad McAllister has been selected as the team’s starting pitcher.

A sophomore from Barry University, McAllister has anchored the Morehead City rotation in 2010.

Marlins reclaim first with 5-2 win over RedWolves

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Brent Powers shut down the Florence RedWolves’ lineup over seven scoreless innings and Thomas Girdwood slammed the door as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Florence RedWolves, 5-2, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Tuesday night.

Morehead City (21-16, 6-3 second half) took a 3-0 lead into the top of the eighth inning before Stephen Carmon’s two-run double cut the advantage to one.

Three Marlins named to American All-Star team

Big inning sends Columbia past Marlins, 9-4

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins led by three runs before the Columbia Blowfish erased their deficit with a six-run fifth inning and defeated Morehead City, 9-4, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth, Columbia (14-23, 2-8 second half) totaled seven hits in the inning against Morehead City (20-16, 5-3 second half) starter Ben White (L, 3-2).

SwampDogs snap Marlins' win streak, 4-2

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Jordan Lindebaum outdueled Shawn Armstrong and Carter Capps shut down the Morehead City Marlins’ offense in the late innings as the Fayetteville SwampDogs defeated the Marlins, 4-2, in front of 1,147 at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Friday night.

Down by three runs in the bottom of the eighth, Morehead City (20-15, 5-2 second half) loaded the bases with one out.

Marlins hold on to beat Blowfish, 4-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After the Morehead City Marlins built a four-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Columbia Blowfish scored three runs and put the tying run on third base. But the Marlins kept Columbia in check to finish off a 4-3 win at Capital City Stadium on Thursday night.

Borenstein slams Marlins past SwampDogs, 13-4

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins hit two home runs - including a Zach Borenstein grand slam - as they overcame an early deficit to defeat the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 13-4, at J.P.

Sclafani named Player of the Week

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League has selected Morehead City Marlins infielder Joe Sclafani as the league’s Player of the Week for Week Five of the 2010 season.

The switch-hitting Sclafani homered once from each side of the plate and drove all of Morehead City’s runs in the team’s 3-1 victory over the Columbia Blowfish on July 1.

Marlins rally to beat Heroes of the Diamond, 11-10

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The second-largest home crowd of the season packed Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium to see the Morehead City Marlins take on the Heroes of the Diamond in an exhibition on Monday night. The 1,713 in attendance saw the Marlins score 10 unanswered runs to beat the Heroes, 11-10, in walk-off fashion.

Marlins to host Heroes of the Diamond

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins will take a break from their Coastal Plain League regular season schedule as they host the Heroes of the Diamond in an exhibition game on Monday, July 5 at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Established in 1990, the Heroes of the Diamond are an all-star team of active-duty military members that travels the country on the Red, White and Blue Tour.

Marlins celebrate July 4 with 9-1 win over Sharks

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – On the night of the Morehead City Marlins’ first-ever Independence Day celebration, the team scored five runs in the third and added four in the eighth as they cruised to a 9-1 win over the Wilmington Sharks on Sunday night.

The bottom third of the Morehead City (18-14) order sparked a big third inning against Wilmington (15-18) starter Matt Talley (L, 0-1).

Marlins announce July 4 time change

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins announced Tuesday that the start time for the team’s game against the Wilmington Sharks on Sunday, July 4 has been moved to 5:05.

That date will feature Time Warner Cable’s Super Duper Sunday promotion.

Four-run third paces Sharks past Marlins, 6-4

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Sharks scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and fended off a number of Morehead City rallies, defeating the Marlins 6-4 at Buck Hardee Field on Saturday night.

Leading 1-0 after two, Wilmington (15-17) extended their lead in the home half of the third against Morehead City (17-14) starter Shawn Armstrong (L, 2-2).

Powers dominates Blowfish as Marlins win 3-1

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Brent Powers struck out a team-record 16 batters and held the Columbia Blowfish without a hit over the final eight innings of Thursday night’s game. His effort combined with Joe Sclafani’s two home runs carried the Morehead City Marlins to a 3-1 win at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Marlins win rain-soaked affair, 8-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – It rained from the first pitch to the last at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Monday night as Joel Sanchez pitched six strong innings and the Morehead City Marlins gave him plenty of run support, defeating the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 8-3.

The ballpark missed much of the downpour that soaked the area and postponed two other games across the league.

FLORENCE, S.C. – Tuesday’s scheduled game between the Morehead City Marlins and the Florence RedWolves has been postponed due to impending rain and lightning in the area. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 27, with game one set to begin at 6:00.

Columbia scores 10 in ninth to beat Marlins, 11-9

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins led the Columbia Blowfish by eight runs through the first eight innings of Monday night’s game at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium. But Shawn Glover’s bases-clearing, two-out double capped a 10-run inning as Columbia came back to beat Morehead City, 11-9.

Marlins shut out Sharks, 1-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Brian Litwin singled home the game's only run in the top of the ninth inning as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the WIlmington Sharks, 1-0, at Buck Hardee Field on Saturday night.

Joe Sclafani opened the ninth inning for Morehead City (15-12) by reaching second base on an error by shortstop Aaron Miller.

Marlins drop one-run game to Wilmington, 4-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Alex Hill hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie, and the Wilmington Sharks held on to defeat the Morehead City Marlins, 4-3, on Friday night at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

The score was tied at three before Hill deposited a Shawn Armstrong (L, 2-1) breaking ball over the right field fence to lead off the eighth.

Marlins to hold Breast Cancer Awareness Night

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins have teamed up with Budget Blinds to hold Breast Cancer Awareness Night as part of Friday’s game against the Wilmington Sharks at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

The Marlins will wear pink jerseys for Friday night’s contest.

Marlins split doubleheader with Florence

FLORENCE, S.C. - For the third time this season, the Morehead City Marlins won the first game of a doubleheader and lost the second. The Marlins defeated the Florence RedWolves, 1-0, in game one before falling 6-0 in game two on Thursday night at American Legion Field.

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Morehead City Marlins scored just one run in game one of Thursday's doubleheader against the Florence RedWolves. But the lone run was all they needed as Brent Powers tossed a complete-game shutout to carry Morehead City to a 1-0 victory at American Legion Field.

Marlins defeat Florence for third straight win

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Chris Schaeffer’s two-run single and solid bullpen work helped push the Morehead City Marlins past the Florence RedWolves, 6-3, in a game halted by a two-hour rain delay on Wednesday night at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

Rain began to fall as the bottom of the sixth inning began.

Schaeffer's blast powers Marlins past Sharks, 11-2

MOREHEAD CITY N.C. - Chris Schaeffer’s second-inning home run sparked an 11-run outburst from the Morehead City Marlins’ offense, as the Marlins cruised past the Wilmington Sharks, 11-2, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Monday night.

Schaeffer came to the plate with runners on second and third in the second inning and smashed a Buck Mosteller (L, 1-3) fastball over the left field fence to give Morehead City (12-10) an early 3-0 lead.

Marlins lose to RedWolves in extras, 3-2

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Neither the Morehead City Marlins nor the Florence RedWolves scored over the first eight innings of Saturday night's game at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium. After each team scored twice in the ninth, the RedWolves pushed across the decisive run which carried them past Morehead City, 3-2.

Marlins take down SwampDogs, 10-2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Preston Shuey hit his first home run of the season and the Morehead City Marlins broke out for nine runs in the game's last three innings, defeateing the Fayetteville SwampDogs 10-2 at J.P.

Columbia shuts out Marlins, 3-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia Blowfish scored once in three separate innings and held the Morehead City Marlins without a run, defeating the Marlins 3-0 at Capital City Stadium on Tuesday night.

Morehead City (9-9) did not pick up a hit until the sixth inning and left a total of nine men on base.

Sharks take down Marlins, 6-2

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. The Wilmington Sharks took advantage of defensive miscues and shut down the Morehead City Marlin offense in the late innings, winning 6-2 at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night.

After touching Morehead City (9-8) starter Ben White (L, 1-1) for two runs through the game's first four innings, Wilmington (8-6) third baseman Chris Mazza opened the fifth with a triple off the left-center field wall and scored on the play as the throw missed the Morehead City cutoff man, making the score 3-0.

Marlins, Blowfish split doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. - For the second consecutive Saturday, the Morehead City Marlins and Columbia Blowfish played a doubleheader. And for the second straight week, each team won one game, splitting two contests Saturday night at Capital City Stadium.

McAllister deals as Marlins take game one, 2-1

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Brad McAllister threw his third consecutive complete game as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Columbia Blowfish, 2-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Capital City Stadium.

Though Columbia (4-9) right fielder Branfy Arias managed an RBI single in the fourth, McAllister (W, 3-0) escaped that inning without further damage and did not allow another run.

Marlins snap skid with 9-1 win over Fayetteville

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Shawn Armstrong threw seven strong innings and the Morehead City Marlins offense broke out if its recent slide, dispatching the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 9-1 at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Friday Night. The win snapped the Marlins’ four-game losing streak.

Marlins fall to Sharks, 2-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Buck Mosteller opened the game with six perfect innings and the Morehead City Marlins could not make up enough ground against the Wilmington Sharks' bullpen, falling 2-1 at Buck Hardee Field on Thursday night.

Making his second start for Wilmington (5-5), Mosteller (W, 1-1) dominated the Marlins (7-6) through the game's first six innings, setting down each of Morehead City's first 18 batters before Joe Sclafani worked a walk to open the top of the seventh.

Perez, Oberacker selected in MLB draft

Two players signed to play with the Morehead City Marlins this summer were selected Tuesday on the second day of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. The Colorado Rockies took Juan Perez in the 18th round, while Chad Oberacker went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round.

A junior from Bethune-Cookman University, Perez racked up 10 saves as the Wildcats' closer in 2010.

Kreis, RedWolves shut down Marlins, 2-0

FLORENCE, S.C. - Joel Sanchez threw eight solid innings but the Morehead City Marlins could not solve Florence's pitching, as they fell to the RedWolves 2-0 at American Legion Field on Tuesday night.

Taking his third turn in the rotation, Sanchez delivered yet another quality start for the Marlins (7-5) as he struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Carter, McAllister selected as Players of the Week

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League announced Monday that Morehead City’s Justyn Carter was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while the Tri-Pitchers of the Week honors went to Martinsville’s Jonathan Cornelius, the Marlins’ Brad McAllister and Jharel Cotton of Peninsula for week one of action (May 26-June 6).

Fayetteville rolls past Marlins, 14-6

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs led by four runs after the top of the first and never look back, cruising to a 14-6 win over the Morehead City Marlins at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night.

The SwampDogs got to Morehead City (7-4) starter Ben Klimesh in their first turn at bat, as Corey LeVier’s two-run double was part of a four-run first inning for Fayetteville (5-2).

Marlins and Blowfish split doubleheader

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Justyn Carter’s walk-off three-run blast gave the Morehead City Marlins an extra-inning, 7-4 win over the Columbia Blowfish in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium. But Morehead City could not capitalize on Ben White’s phenomenal pitching performance as the Blowfish bounced back to win game two, 6-2 in 11 innings.

Marlins fall at Fayetteville, 11-4

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins gave up the game’s first three runs and could not come back, falling 11-4 to the Fayetteville SwampDogs at J.P.

Marlins hammer HiToms behind McAllister's gem

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins’ offense matched its season-high scoring total against the Thomasville HiToms on Thursday night. Those nine runs were plenty for starting pitcher Brad McAllister, who struck out 10 batters to help the Marlins cruise to a 9-1 victory at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

EDENTON, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins led by two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but could not hold on, losing 4-3 to the Edenton Steamers at Historic Hicks Field on Tuesday night.

With Morehead City (5-1) leading 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Josh Herzenberg (L, 0-1) relieved starter Joel Sanchez and gave up a run-scoring groundout to cut the Marlin lead to a single run.

Armstrong fans nine as Marlins win, 4-3

Shawn Armstrong struck out nine in four innings of work and the Morehead City Marlins scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Florence RedWolves, 4-3, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Sunday night.

Armstrong, a redshirt-freshman right-hander out of East Carolina, arrived at Morehead City earlier in the day and joined the Marlins (5-0) at the start of batting practice. He then made his season debut in relief of starter Rob Kumbadovic in the sixth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced.

Armstrong (W, 1-0) would go on to throw the game’s final four innings and strike out nine Florence (3-2) batters – including Tyler Boyd to end the game – against just one walk.

Marlins beat Asheboro 9-3, win fourth straight

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Ben Klimesh struck out eight over six innings of work and the Morehead City Marlins' offense broke out as they cruised to a 9-3 win over the Asheboro Copperheads at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

A Marquis Riley two-run single in the top of the first inning gave Asheboro (1-3) an early lead, but the Marlins (4-0) put up three runs in the bottom half of that inning and never looked back.

Marlins down SwampDogs in home opener, 3-1

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - On opening night at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium, the 2,146 Morehead City Marlins fans in attendance were rewarded with a 3-1 win over the Fayetteville SwampDogs Friday night.

Temple junior Ben White took the mound for Morehead City (3-0) and delivered the team’s third quality start in as many outings, allowing just one run over six strong innings of work.

McAllister goes the distance in Marlins' 5-3 win

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Brad McAllister threw the first complete game in team history Thursday night, leading the Morehead City Marlins to a 5-3 win over the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium.

A sophomore right-hander out of Barry University, McAllister (W, 1-0) began his first start in a Morehead City (2-0) uniform by retiring the first nine batters he faced.

Marlins' extra-inning heroics defeat Daredevils, 4-3

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. – Justyn Carter drove in the winning run and Colin Parker recorded the save as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Outer Banks Daredevils, 4-3, on Wednesday night to win their inaugural Coastal Plain League contest in dramatic fashion.

With the score tied at three in the top of the tenth with two on and no out, Tripp Lancaster dropped down a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with one away.

Marlins Announce 2010 Promotions

Mike Schaaf MAAC Pitcher of the Week

EDISON, NJ - Freshman pitcher Mike Schaaf has been named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week. This past week, Schaaf earned his third win of the season in the first game against Marist on Saturday. The freshman struck out eight batters while allowing just four hits in 7.2 innings of work.

Zander Kean to be the team’s broadcaster for the 2010 season

The Morehead City Marlins announced today that they have selected Zander Kean to be the team’s broadcaster for the 2010 season.

Kean will serve as the Marlins’ Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations, acting as a liaison between the team and the greater Morehead City community. He will also broadcast each of the Marlins’ home games via the Coastal Plain League’s online CPL WebPass service.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the Marlins’ family,” Kean said.

Host Family Informational Meeting Scheduled

Justyn Carter Named MAAC Player of the Week

Edison, NJ- Sophomore infielder Justyn Carter has been named MAAC Player of the Week. Over the course of the past week, Carter batted .480 (12-25), drove in four runs and tallied nine stolen bases as the Peacocks went 6-1 last week. He scored 10 runs and recorded three doubles.

Christopher Marmo Named General Manager

Morehead City, N.C. — The Morehead City Marlins announced today the hiring of Christopher Marmo as the club’s new General Manager for their inaugural season in the Coastal Plain League.

Marmo has been working in the Coastal Plain League for the past three seasons.

ATLANTIC BEACH — More than 250 of Carteret County’s biggest baseball fans gathered Tuesday night in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel to hear Hall of Famer Rich “Goose” Gossage and longtime N.Y. Yankee Clyde King speak at the Morehead City Marlins inaugural Hot Stove Dinner and Auction.

“I’ve been a part of a lot of firsts in my life, but I’m very happy to be a part of this first here tonight,” said Gossage.

Diamond fever hits in 2009; MHC Marlins the top story for 2009

NEWS-TIMES Published: Friday, January 1, 2010 3:05 PM EST DENNIS THOMASON MOREHEAD CITY — Diamond fever really hit the strike zone in Carteret County during 2009, although the success of America’s national pastime countywide has been building steadily in recent years. From an American Legion state championship in 2006, to league titles by all three high schools during the first decade of the new millennium, 2009 brought the launching of soon-to-open Big Rock Stadium in Rotary Park and the interest of a summer collegiate team. On an individual basis, the year featured a much bigger step by a former West Carteret High School standout who was drafted into the professional ranks and certainly proved his mettle in Single A and Double A baseball this summer. And although the conference champion Croatan High School baseball team did not quite crack the top 10 stories for 2009, the Cougars spent much of the season being recognized as the team to beat in the 2A state ranks.

Marlins introduced as latest addition to summer baseball league

MOREHEAD CITY — The New Bern River Rats baseball team closed shop after the summer of 2007, and owner Sabrina Bengel took two years off to assess options.

Bengel was searching for a suitable facility to host games in the Coastal Plain League — a summer college baseball league — and she found just that in Morehead City. During a press conference Thursday, the Morehead City Marlins were introduced as the latest addition to the CPL.

League president Pete Bock made the formal announcement and introduced Bengel as the team president and her son, Buddy, as the team's vice president.
