2010: Season in Review

The following is a compilation of facts, figures and notable moments from the Morehead City Marlins inaugural 2010 season, in which they finished 34-20, earning the No. 3 seed in the Petitt Cup. The team put together a league-best 19-7 mark during the second half, the best winning percentage for any team in the league in either half.

Marlins eliminated by Steamers

EDENTON, N.C. – After winning Friday’s resumed game, the Morehead City Marlins fell to the Edenton Steamers, 7-0, at Historic Hicks Field in the decisive third game of the first round of their Petitt Cup series.

EDENTON, N.C. – A downpour forced the suspension of the Morehead City Marlins’ playoff game against the Edenton Steamers at Historic Hicks Field on Thursday night. When play was stopped, Morehead City reliever Thomas Girdwood had begun to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning.

Quintero signs with Astros

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Former Morehead City Marlin Rodney Quintero has signed a minor-league contract with the Houston Astros organization. The Astros selected Quintero in the 25th round of the 2010 First-Year Player draft in June.

Marlins topped by steamers in extras, 4-3

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Peter Barrows scored the go-ahead wild pitch in the top of the 12th inning and the Edenton Steamers held on from there, defeating the Morehead City Marlins, 4-3, on Wednesday night at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in game one of the first round of the Petitt Cup.

Thomas Girdwood relieved Ryan Smith with runners on second and third and none out in a 3-3 game in  the 12th.

Sunday's game time moved up to 6:05

FLORENCE, S.C. – After the Morehead City Marlins wrapped up the second-half South Division title with a win in game one of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader, rain moved into the Florence area and forced the postponement of game two.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins were unable to hang on to an eighth-inning lead and then could not get the tying run home from third in the top of the ninth, falling 3-2 to the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field on Monday Night.

With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth, Thomas Girdwood walked pinch-hitter Joey Rapp with the bases loaded to put Wilmington (21-26, 8-11 second half) ahead, 3-2.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Joe Sclafani scored on a wild pitch to break an extra-inning tie as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Wilmington Sharks, 3-2, at Buck Hardee Field on Friday night.

Zach Borenstein stood at the plate with two out in the top of the tenth when Patrick Mincey’s (L, 1-3) wild pitch allowed Sclafani to score from third, giving Morehead City (27-16, 12-3) their first lead of the game.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League released the National team roster for the 2010 CPL All-Star game on Wednesday, and Morehead City Marlins right-hander Brad McAllister has been selected as the team’s starting pitcher.

A sophomore from Barry University, McAllister has anchored the Morehead City rotation in 2010.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Brad McAllister threw his third consecutive complete game as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Columbia Blowfish, 2-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Capital City Stadium.

Though Columbia (4-9) right fielder Branfy Arias managed an RBI single in the fourth, McAllister (W, 3-0) escaped that inning without further damage and did not allow another run.

Perez, Oberacker selected in MLB draft

Two players signed to play with the Morehead City Marlins this summer were selected Tuesday on the second day of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. The Colorado Rockies took Juan Perez in the 18th round, while Chad Oberacker went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round.

A junior from Bethune-Cookman University, Perez racked up 10 saves as the Wildcats' closer in 2010.

Kreis, RedWolves shut down Marlins, 2-0

FLORENCE, S.C. - Joel Sanchez threw eight solid innings but the Morehead City Marlins could not solve Florence's pitching, as they fell to the RedWolves 2-0 at American Legion Field on Tuesday night.

Taking his third turn in the rotation, Sanchez delivered yet another quality start for the Marlins (7-5) as he struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs led by four runs after the top of the first and never look back, cruising to a 14-6 win over the Morehead City Marlins at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night.

The SwampDogs got to Morehead City (7-4) starter Ben Klimesh in their first turn at bat, as Corey LeVier’s two-run double was part of a four-run first inning for Fayetteville (5-2).

EDENTON, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins led by two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but could not hold on, losing 4-3 to the Edenton Steamers at Historic Hicks Field on Tuesday night.

Armstrong fans nine as Marlins win, 4-3

Shawn Armstrong struck out nine in four innings of work and the Morehead City Marlins scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Florence RedWolves, 4-3, at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Sunday night.

Armstrong, a redshirt-freshman right-hander out of East Carolina, arrived at Morehead City earlier in the day and joined the Marlins (5-0) at the start of batting practice. He then made his season debut in relief of starter Rob Kumbadovic in the sixth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced.

Armstrong (W, 1-0) would go on to throw the game’s final four innings and strike out nine Florence (3-2) batters – including Tyler Boyd to end the game – against just one walk.

Marlins beat Asheboro 9-3, win fourth straight

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Ben Klimesh struck out eight over six innings of work and the Morehead City Marlins' offense broke out as they cruised to a 9-3 win over the Asheboro Copperheads at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium.

A Marquis Riley two-run single in the top of the first inning gave Asheboro (1-3) an early lead, but the Marlins (4-0) put up three runs in the bottom half of that inning and never looked back.

The Morehead City Marlins announced today that they have selected Zander Kean to be the team’s broadcaster for the 2010 season.

Kean will serve as the Marlins’ Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations, acting as a liaison between the team and the greater Morehead City community. He will also broadcast each of the Marlins’ home games via the Coastal Plain League’s online CPL WebPass service.

Diamond fever hits in 2009; MHC Marlins the top story for 2009

NEWS-TIMES Published: Friday, January 1, 2010 3:05 PM EST DENNIS THOMASON MOREHEAD CITY — Diamond fever really hit the strike zone in Carteret County during 2009, although the success of America’s national pastime countywide has been building steadily in recent years. From an American Legion state championship in 2006, to league titles by all three high schools during the first decade of the new millennium, 2009 brought the launching of soon-to-open Big Rock Stadium in Rotary Park and the interest of a summer collegiate team. On an individual basis, the year featured a much bigger step by a former West Carteret High School standout who was drafted into the professional ranks and certainly proved his mettle in Single A and Double A baseball this summer. And although the conference champion Croatan High School baseball team did not quite crack the top 10 stories for 2009, the Cougars spent much of the season being recognized as the team to beat in the 2A state ranks.

Marlins introduced as latest addition to summer baseball league

MOREHEAD CITY — The New Bern River Rats baseball team closed shop after the summer of 2007, and owner Sabrina Bengel took two years off to assess options.

Bengel was searching for a suitable facility to host games in the Coastal Plain League — a summer college baseball league — and she found just that in Morehead City. During a press conference Thursday, the Morehead City Marlins were introduced as the latest addition to the CPL.

League president Pete Bock made the formal announcement and introduced Bengel as the team president and her son, Buddy, as the team's vice president.
