WILSON, N.C. — In a wild back-and-forth affair, the Morehead City Marlins rode the long ball en route to a 8-5 win over the Wilson Tobs at Fleming Stadium Sunday night.
Trailing by one run in the 8th, the Marlins sparked a 2-out rally that flipped the script of the game. Zack Miller (Delaware) pinch hit with a base hit, and Daniel Little (Richmond) followed with a walk. Then Colby Johnson (Charleston) launched a 3-run shot to left, his 3rd of the summer, to put the Marlins out in front 7-5.
After Johnson, Jace Mercer (Cincinnati) followed with a solo shot to go back-to-back and put the Marlins up 8-5.
Cal Hehnke (Omaha) pitched a 1-2-3 9th to earn his 4th save of the summer to lead the team.
The homer-filled game started long before that eventful 8th inning, with Jaco Reimold (St. Leo) hitting his first long ball of the year in the 2nd inning, to put the Marlins up 2-0.
The Tobs responded with a homer of their own in the bottom half, with Hunter Gore (Mt. Olive) hitting a three-run blast to put the Tobs up 1.
The see-saw battle continued in the 4th, when Daniel Little went the other way for a two-run homer, his 2nd of the summer, to put the Marlins back in front 4-3.
In the 5th, things turned back towards the Tobs, as De'Andre Pitts (Longwood) tied the game on a solo shot, and Deshawn Lookout hit a sac fly to give the Tobs a 5-4 lead.
Leo Perez (Texas A&M Corpus-Christi) bridged the gap with two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th, and earned the win with Colby Johnson's homer in the 8th.
The win was the first of the season for the Marlins against the Tobs in their 4th and final attempt. The Marlins are back home tomorrow as they host the Wilmington Sharks.
