Marlins Fall 14-2 to SwampDogs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Saturday night's contest at J.P. Riddle Stadium was all SwampDogs, as the Marlins fell at the hands of their East division rival 14-2. 

The Marlins opened up the scoring with an RBI single from Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. However, Alex Kachler (Methodist) responded with an RBI single of his own for the SwampDogs in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game at 1-1.

Starting pitcher Doug Smith (Toledo) ran into trouble in the 3rd inning, when the SwampDogs added three runs to jump out to a 4-1 lead.

Ashton Raines (Bloomsburg) surrendered a run in the 4th before the Marlins responded with a Daniel Little (Richmond0 run to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the 5th.

The game took a turn in the 6th, with the Swampdogs batting around to plate six runs off Marlin pitching. 

The SwampDogs scored three more times in the 7th to walk off the Marlins with a 14-2 mercy rule victory.

The win was the fourth for Fayetteville against Morehead City this year, but the Marlins still lead the season series 5-4. 

The Marlins are on the road again tomorrow, as they travel to Wilson to play the Tobs. The Marlins are looking for their first win of the year against the North division leader.
