WILMINGTON, N.C. — In a classic pitchers' duel at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington, the Marlins came through with three runs in the 9th to top the Sharks 3-0. With the win, the Marlins leapfrog the Sharks in the standings, and sit at first place in the 2nd half East Division.
Still scoreless heading to the 9th inning, the Marlins got their first runner on after Sharks first baseman Cory Everett (Erksine) dropped a popup that allowed Jacob Reimold (St. Leo) to reach.
After a successful sacrifice bunt from Ty Barclay (Emporia State), Daniel Little (Richmond) came through with an RBI single to center to score pinch runner Tony Mack (N.C. A&T) from 2nd for the first run of the ballgame.
Blaze Glenn (Youngstown State) provided some insurance with a 2-RBI double later in the inning to extend the Marlin lead to 3-0.
Cal Hehnke (Omaha) continued the excellent Marlin pitching from the night with a scoreless 9th inning to earn his 2nd save of the summer.
Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) got the start for the Marlins — his first appearance on the mound in 2019. Shepherd threw 12 innings for the Marlins last summer, as well as 79 innings for Catawba this year, but had not thrown in over 6 weeks.
Shepherd threw three shutout innings, while only allowing 2 hits. Those would end up being the only 2 hits of the night for the Sharks.
Keegan Foge (Northern Alabama) faced the minimum in his 2 innings of relief work. Braden Scott (Indiana) threw a perfect 6th inning before Leo Perez (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) threw a perfect 7th and 8th with 5 strikeouts.
The shutout was the 3rd for Morehead City this summer, and the win was their 10th in 11 games against the Sharks.
The Marlins are back in action tomorrow night at Big Rock Stadium as they host the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
