Morehead City N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins (23-9) come back from the All-Star break with a 12-1 win over the Edenton Steamers (15-15).
On a night where the Marlins were clicking on all cylinders, they had four different pitchers throw in the came and combined for 11 strikeouts.
Connor Schultz (Butler University) got the start and went two times through the Steamers lineup and allowed the only run that Edenton scored on the night. Schultz added six strikeouts on the night to make it 36 total on the season.
After Schultz, Mike Appel (Central Connecticut State University) was called on and threw 1.2 innings of work not allowing a hit and picked up his third win on the year. Appel was succeeded by one frame thrown by Keegan Foge (North Alabama University) and two innings from Cal Hehnke (University of Nebraska-Omaha) to close the game out.
All while the offense put up runs in six of the eight innings they came to the plate. The first run for the Marlins was driven in by Dusty Baker (East Carolina University) in the home half of the first to tie the game at one.
Then in the bottom of the second, Bryan Kowalski (Pfeiffer University) picked up his first RBI on the summer on a fielder's choice that scored Hunter Shepherd (Catawba College). Jace Mercer (University of Cincinnati) followed that up with his second hit of the night and made it a 3-1 Marlin lead.
The Marlins tacked on a five run fifth inning that began with an RBI double from Jack Harris (San Francisco State University) to make it a three-run Marlin lead. Followed by Kowalski's first hit of the summer and it drove home a pair to make it a three RBI night for the shortstop. In the same frame, Mercer drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-1 Marlins.
An insurance run was added by the Marlins in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
All told, the win improved the Marlins to 14-3 at home. The Fish will hit the road tomorrow night however, to take on the Wilmington Sharks.
