MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -- Sunday was all Marlins at Big Rock Stadium, as Morehead City (5-3) took both games of a doubleheader against Wilmington (3-6).
The Marlins and Sharks played two innings on Friday before a rainstorm called for an early night. The Marlins were leading 4-0 in the 3rd, and the first game of today's doubleheader resumed at that point. Game 2 of the doubleheader was shortened to 7 innings.
In Game 1, The Marlins jumped out to an early lead with help from the slick conditions on Friday night. A Tony Mack (N.C. A&T) RBI single broke open the scoring, then the Marlins put up a 4-spot with help from a pair of Sharks' errors and a wild pitch.
In the resumption of Game 1, the Marlins tabbed Ashton Raines (Bloomsburg) to take over, and he was dominant. In six innings, Raines allowed only one earned run and struck out nine. Mack added a solo shot for extra run support, and the Marlins cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Ryan Loutos (Washington University - St. Louis) was tasked with the start in game 2, and picked up right where Raines left off. Loutos threw five innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out eight. On the year, Loutos has thrown 10 scoreless frames with 15 strikeouts and just one walk.
The Marlins got on the board early in game 2, with an RBI single from Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) in the 1st. Colby Johnson (Charleston) came in to score on an error in the 2nd, and a sacrifice fly from Ty Babin (Campbell) in the 3rd extended the lead to 3-0.
Cal Hehnke (Nebraska-Omaha) made his Marlins debut with a scoreless sixth inning, and 2018 Marlin Kenny Wells (Seton Hill) made his first appearance of the 2019 season in the 7th. Although he allowed an unearned run on an error, he finished off the 7th inning for the first Marlins save of the season.
The Marlins hit the road tomorrow and will travel to Hampton, VA to play the Peninsula Pilots.
