Bolton Pitches Wilmington Past Marlins, 5-1

Wilmington, N.C. – Tyler Bolton showed the Morehead City Marlins exactly what he has shown the rest of the Coastal Plain League this season. The tall right-hander mixed a stellar fastball with a brilliant changeup to lead his Wilmington Sharks (17-16) by the Morehead City Marlins (16-19) on a beautiful Wednesday night in Wilmington, N.C.

The Sharks wasted no time getting on the board as they scored runs on a fielder’s choice, as well as a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead after the home half of the first inning. Bolton and Morehead City starting pitcher Ben Fuchs settled down as neither team scored a run over the next five inning.

Wilmington added three more runs in the home half of the seventh on a throwing error with the bases loaded, as well as a ball that hit directly on the third base bag and sailed into left field to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Morehead City got one back in the top half of the eighth due in large part to a laser double down the left field line off the bat of Hayden Jones. He later scored on a bloop single down the left field line, bringing the Marlins to within 5-1. However, four runs would be as close as the Marlins would come as the Sharks held on for the victory.

Bolton improved to a perfect 4-0 as he was terrific on the bump for the Sharks. He tossed seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Fuchs suffered the loss for the Marlins, falling to 3-1 on the 2013 Coastal Plain League season.

Morehead City returns home on Thursday night to face the Asheboro Copperheads at Big Rock Stadium at 7:05 PM on Thursday night. Logan James is slated to start for the Marlins, while the Copperheads starter is yet to be announced.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
