Sam Ott’s Big Night Leads Marlins Over Generals 8-2

Sam Ott led the Morehead City Marlins past the Petersburg Generals in a crucial Eastern Conference game. The Marlins came to hit scoring eight runs in an 8-2 victory over the Generals in front of a packed house on a Monday night in Morehead City.

Despite ultimately losing the ballgame the Generals struck first in the ballgame. In the top half of the first when Nick Dini grounded into a double play to second baseman Hayden Jones with runners on the corners for the Generals. The Marlins opted for the double play, allowing Zach Zarzour to score from third after drawing a leadoff walk earlier in the inning.

The Marlins didn’t waste any time taking the lead as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the home half of the first on RBI singles off the bat of Ott, Dalton Britt and Hayden Jones. Morehead City tacked on two more runs in thebottom of the fifth on a two-RBI liner into right-center by Ott.

Petersburg got one back in the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of Brink Ambler. However, the second runs was all the Generals could plate in the inning as they dropped an 8-2 decision in Morehead City.

Jerry Vasto picked up the win for the Marlins. The southpaw out of Felician College went five innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked two in just his second outing for the Marlins this season. Jonathan Bobea and Jhon Peralta combined for the remaining four innings, allowing just one run. Tim Koons suffered the loss for the Generals. He allowed six runs on eight hits. The righty struck out three and walked three in the outing, falling to 3-3 on the season.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
