Logan James (Stanford University) and Jonathan Bobea combined for a three hit shutout of the Petersburg Generals (6-28/2-8) on a beautiful Sunday evening in Morehead City, NC. The Marlins (18-19/ 6-3) scored just two runs on two hits en route to a 2-0 victory.
The Marlins picked up both of their runs in the home half of the second inning when Zach Arnold was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then Ryan Cranmer sprinted home from third on a sacrifice fly to deep shortstop off the bat of Cole Billingsley.
Both James and Petersburg’s Rene Estrada dominated the offensive opposition for the remaining innings, but it was the Marlins who walked away with the 2-0 victory.
With the win James improved to 2-1 on the season. He went seven innings allowing just three hits, while striking out eighth and walking five. Bobea came on for the save and tossed two solid innings, facing one more than the minimum and earning five strikeouts. Estrada fell to 0-1 on the season despite going six innings allowing just two hits. The right-hander our of Barry ran into to trouble when he walked five batters, and also hit five batters. He did strikeout two, allowing to runs, both of which were earned.
The Marlins are off on Monday, but return to Big Rock Stadium on Tuesday night to host the Wilmington Sharks. Starting pitchers for both teams have yet to be announced, but plenty of tickets are still available and can purchased at the ticket booth on game day, online or at the Marlins team store on the Morehead City waterfront.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
