Haynal, Brown Lead Marlins Past Mustangs 5-2

Brad Haynal and Dylan Brown have been swinging a hot bat in the second half of the 2013 Coastal Plain League Season. The two didn’t cool off on a rainy Friday night in Martinsville, VA as the Marlins dropped the Mustangs by a score of 5-2 at Hooker Field.

Despite losing the ballgame the Mustangs did score first, taking a 1-0 lead after one inning of play when Devan Ahart scored on a Marlins error.

The Morehead City offense awoke for three runs in the top of third inning on a Brown single and a two-RBI single off the bat of Haynal. The marlins added an insurance run in the top half of the sixth thanks to a long home run off the bat of Ryan Muno. The homer was Muno’s first since returning back to the Morehead City lineup.

Martinsville got one back in the home half of the seventh when Ozzie Gonzalez crushed a home run just inside the foul poll. Ryan Cranmer got the run right back for the Marlins in the ninth as he roped a sacrifice fly to score Dalton Britt, making it a 5-2 game. The Mustangs failed to get any closer as Jhon Peralta (Odessa College) shut the door in relief of Logan James and Brandon Saunders. James earned the win as he tossed five innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run, and two walks. The left-hander out of Stanford struck out four.

The Marlins return home to Big Rock Stadium on Saturday night when they host the Edenton Steamers with a 7:05 pm first pitch. With the win Morehead City remains perfect on the second half at 3-0. Following Saturday night’s game, Ryan Cranmer and Dalton Britt will head out to Peninsula for the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game.
