Morehead City, N.C. – The Edenton Steamers have had their fair share of success against the Morehead City Marlins in the 2013 Coastal Plain League season. Saturday night was no different as the Steamers defeated the Marlins by a score of 3-1 at Big Rock Stadium.
Morehead City starting pitcher Nathan Harsh battled through a cut on his right thumb to toss four innings allowing two runs on just two hits. The trouble for Harsh came when he surrendered six walks. However, the tall right-hander matched his walks total with his strikeout total to limit the damage, including a big strikeout of Laz Villa to end the top of the fourth with two runners on base.
The Steamers picked up the only two runs they would need in the top half of the first inning. Nick Thompson scored on a wild pitch with Josh Hampton at the plate and then Villa scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Kirsch to conclude the Edenton scoring in the first inning.
Edenton picked up an insurance run in the top half of the ninth on a fielder’s choice to second off the bat of Hampton with the bases loaded. The Marlins got one back on an RBI double to left-center off the bat of Ryan Cranmer that scored Dylan Brown all the way from first and cut the Edenton lead to just 3-1. However, the Marlins failed to get any closer as Jake McCoy got two big strikeouts to end the ballgame and hand the Marlins their first loss of the second half.
Morehead City returns home on Thursday night to face the Asheboro Copperheads at Big Rock Stadium at 7:05 PM. Dalton Britt and Cranmer will be in action on Monday night at 7:05 PM for the CPL All-Star Game at War Memorial Field in Hampton, V.A.
