Defense Defeats Marlins in Loss to SwampDogs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs (4-4) broke a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with four unearned runs as the ‘Dogs took home a 5-1 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (2-5) Tuesday evening at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Three errors in the seventh inning plagued the Marlins, as the SwampDogs sent nine men to the plate in the frame. Andrew Parker, Dale Urquhart and Mike Tauchman all singled in the inning, with Urquhart picking up an RBI and Tauchman picking up two RBIs which made the score 5-1.

Fayetteville scored their first run in the third inning when Dale Urquhart tripled to right-center field to lead off the frame. He came around to score the very next batter when Brian Bullard hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the SwampDogs ahead 1-0.

The score stayed that way until the top of the sixth inning when Corey Bass led off when he reached and advanced to second base on an error by Joel Thys. After Damon Hoggard advanced Bass on a sacrifice bunt, Geoff DeGroot flew out to center for a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1.

Keith Picht (1-0) notched his first victory of the year, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings while Aaron Stull (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four unearned runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. For the second time this season Steve Landell turned in a solid performance, going six strong innings and allowing just one run on three hits.

The Marlins are back on the field tomorrow night when they host Fayetteville to take on the SwampDogs for the fourth time in five days. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the call on the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The Marlins turned their third and fourth double plays of the season... With his eighth inning single, DeGroot has reached base safely in every game he has played... Although the bullpen suffered the loss, Stull and Ben Fuchs combined to toss two innings without allowing an earned run.
