Morehead City, N.C. – As April gets underway, the Marlins are excited to add two players to the roster. Sam Ott (pictured right) and Chad Shannon (pictured left), both outfielders, will be spending the summer at the Crystal Coast.
Sam Ott, a redshirt-sophomore at Eastern Michigan University, has started every game this season for the Eagles. Through 27 games, the Canton, Michigan native is batting .313 with two home runs and 15 RBI. In his first year last season, Ott was third on the team with a .333 batting average, appearing in 32 games.
Last summer, Ott participated with the Joplin Outlaws in the M.I.N.K. Summer Collegiate League. During his time with the Outlaws in Missouri, he hit .297 with 13 stolen bases and 17 RBI in 39 games played.
Chad Shannon is a 6-3, 225-pound sophomore at Johnson County Community College. Shannon is currently hitting .446 for the 26-11 Cavaliers. In his first 28 games, he has four home runs, 21 RBI and has scored 31 runs. On March 21, Shannon was recognized as the National Junior College Athletic Association player of the week, as the Cavaliers won all six games. Shannon led the way as he hit .529 (9-17) with two home runs in that span.
The Morehead City Marlins are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer while past experiences have been proven positive for both players and hosts.
