Baseball is in the air now that spring training games are set to begin March 2, and there are 44 Coastal Plain League alums that highlight rosters in both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues (logo courtesy of MLB Pressbox).

Of the 30 major league teams, 25 of them are represented with at least one CPL alum in camp. The CPL had 50 alums invited to spring training in 2011 and 44 back in 2010.

The American League had 25 CPL alums while the remaining 19 came from teams in the National League. Of the 44 players in spring training, 28 of them have experience in the majors, having made their respective debuts in prior seasons. Eight of those – Jerry Sands (LA Dodgers), Cody Eppley (Texas), Evan Scribner (Oakland), Brandon Guyer (Tampa Bay), Andy Dirks (Detroit), Scott Diamond (Minnesota), Dave Sappelt (Chicago Cubs) and Brad Brach (San Diego) - debuted in 2011.

Further highlighting the list is former Wilson Tobs pitcher and Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander. Coming off his most productive season thus far, Verlander, a four-time All-Star, was honored as the 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young winner after finishing with a 24-5 regular season record and league-best 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts.

All current CPL clubs (noting that Forest City shares Spartanburg’s history, and the same for Morehead City and New Bern) were represented with at least one alum invited to spring training. Florence led all CPL clubs with seven alums, while Edenton and Wilson followed closely with five each. Fayetteville, Peninsula and Wilmington were next with four alumni each. Meanwhile, Spartanburg/Forest City, New Bern/Morehead City, Petersburg and Thomasville had three representatives. Asheboro was next with two alums. Finally, Columbia, Gastonia and Martinsville rounded things out with one each; while former franchises Durham, Outer Banks and Rocky Mount also were represented with one alum apiece.
