Morehead City, N.C. – As the CPL season rapidly approaches, Carteret County fans do not have to wait any longer for collegiate baseball action. Morehead City plans to kick off baseball activities at Big Rock Stadium this month. This February 18-19, Morehead City will host their first college baseball tournament in 2012.
Four Division II teams from four different states will play their first games of the season at Big Rock Stadium. Felician College, Merrimack College, Molloy College, and Southern Connecticut State University baseball programs will make the trek down south to the lovely Crystal Coast next weekend to kick off their spring season.
Southern Connecticut State University Baseball is no stranger to Carteret County. This year will mark the third consecutive year that the Owls will play in Morehead City and second year at the ‘Rock’. After finishing with a record of 45-9-1 in 2011, the Owls placed 6th nationally in the 2012 Preseason Poll by NCBWA.
The second team to accept an invite to ‘The Rock’ for the February opening is Felician College. The northern New Jersey college program posted 24 wins last year and also featured a starting pitcher from the Marlins’ 2010 South Division Championship team. Joel Sanchez posted a school record 1.33 ERA in 74.2 innings which earned him second-team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
Both Merrimack College (MA) and Molloy College (NY) will round
out the field and will play in Morehead City for the first time.
Merrimack finished the 2011 campaign with 14 wins and has been
picked seventh in the Northeast Division in Northeast-10 Preseason
Poll. Molloy finished last season with 31 wins and are the
projected winner in the East Coast Conference Division Preseason
"This is another opportunity to showcase talented schools from the North and to provide a little Southern hospitality as well," said Morehead City Marlins General Manager Christopher Marmo. "The Town of Morehead City built a fantastic facility to host events of this particular nature,” added Marmo.
All games will be held this weekend on February 18-19 at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium. The tournament schedule will consist of four games on each day with game times set for 10 AM, 1 PM, and 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Game admission will be free for all games.
