Former Kansas City Royal and Team USA Coach, to Manage Marlins

Morehead City, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins have officially announced their next manager for the 2012 season. Former Major League Baseball player and Team USA 18u hitting coach, Brian McRae (picture courtesy of Chris Vleisides/Kansas City Royals), will lead the Marlins in their quest for the Petitt Cup Championship.

Brian McRae, a former first round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals, grew up around the game of baseball. As a professional, McRae played for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, and Toronto Blue Jays. In 10 MLB seasons, McRae established an impressive career compiling 103 HR, 532 RBI, 196 SB, and a .261 batting average. His father, Hal McRae, accumulated a successful 19-year MLB career, mostly with the Kansas City Royals, and later as manager of the Royals and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In the early 1990’s, McRae played for the Royals during his father’s tenure as manager.

After his professional career, McRae combined his baseball experiences with broadcast journalism studies at the University of Kansas and began Union Broadcasting, a Kansas City sports AM station. His on-air expertise has led to many opportunities including radio/TV broadcasting with the Kansas City Royals, a radio/video host with MLB.com, and a baseball analyst with ESPN on Baseball Tonight. McRae continues to share expert baseball analysis for Metro Sports and Union Broadcasting in Kansas City. Also, he generously devotes his time to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the Marlins,” said McRae. “I’m certainly looking forward to becoming a member of the Morehead City community and bringing a championship to Morehead City.”

Residing in Kansas City, Missouri, McRae currently is the general manager, director of operations, and part-time coach for the KC Sluggers Baseball Team. The KC Sluggers is a travel ball organization for Kansas City high school youth. The youth baseball program currently has three former members playing in MLB: Shaun Marcum, Joey Devine, and Albert Pujols. McRae’s coaching career continued with the 18u USA National Team as a hitting, outfield, and first base coach from 2010-2011.

“The Marlins are fortunate to have Brian’s level of experience coming to Morehead City this summer,” said Marlins owner Buddy Bengel. “Both our players and our fans will share the excitement of having Brian’s professionalism both on and off the field in Morehead City. Brian will be a great asset to our league and community and we could not be more excited to welcome him.”
