Morehead City, N.C. – The Morehead City Marlins wound up on the losing end of a 9-1 rout on Wednesday night. The Marlins played host to the Asheboro Copperheads for Big Rock Stadium’s first Coastal Plain League game of the summer.
The Copperheads’ starting pitcher, Eric Shuford, struck out five and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and the Morehead City batters were stifled all evening.
Asheboro’s Marquis Riley went 4-for-6 at the plate, hitting singles in each of his first four at-bats until Marlins centerfielder Andrew Alford made a tremendous sliding catch to rob Riley of a hit in his fifth chance. Alford also recorded two of Morehead City’s only three hits on the evening.
The Marlins move to an overall record of 0-2 and will trek to Wilmington to play a double-header with the Sharks on Thursday night.
The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
