Two Pirates Commit to Marlins

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins announced today the signing of two players from East Carolina University. Freshmen Chase McDonald and Dario Santangelo will don the Marlins uniform this summer.

McDonald, a heavy-hitting first baseman from Greenville, has started 15 of 17 games for the Pirates so far this season. As a designated hitter, he has a .273 batting average, one home run, and 9 RBI in 55 at-bats. McDonald was highly-touted coming out of high school. The former Under Armour Preseason All-American earned his team’s MVP award and All-State honors as a senior.

“McDonald is a strong hitter with a tremendous future in college baseball,” said Marlins Manager Jay Bergman. “He will be essential to our lineup this summer.”

Santangelo, an Edison, NJ native, is redshirting for the Pirates this season, due to the tremendous depth of the East Carolina staff, which leads all of NCAA Division I with a 1.67 team ERA. The right-hander garnered numerous honors in high school; including an all-conference nod his senior year and an honorable mention selection to the Perfect Game All-American team following his junior season.

“Dario will throw a lot of innings for the Marlins,” said Bergman. “He’s got great stuff, and a good, hard slider. We will probably use him a lot like we did Shawn Armstrong last summer.”
