McAllister deals as Marlins take game one, 2-1

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Brad McAllister threw his third consecutive complete game as the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Columbia Blowfish, 2-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Capital City Stadium.

Though Columbia (4-9) right fielder Branfy Arias managed an RBI single in the fourth, McAllister (W, 3-0) escaped that inning without further damage and did not allow another run.

He struck out seven batters over the game's final three innings - including a strikeout of Brian Hill to end the game - as he recorded his third complete-game victory in as many starts.

Morehead City (9-6) opened the scoring in the top of the second inning off of Columbia starter John Long (L, 0-1). With two down and Stephen Marino on second base, Brian Litwin singled up the middle to send Marino home and give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead.

Joe Sclafani then doubled down the left field line with one out in the third inning. Two batters later, Zach Borenstein singled through the right side to drive home Sclafani for Morehead City's second run.

Columbia had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, as McAllister gave up back-to-back singles and then balked runners to second and third with nobody out. But he then struck out Hill, Chase Vergason and DeMontez Jones to keep the Blowfish off the board.

McAllister got defensive help from catcher Gabe Brown, who threw out three Columbia runners on the basepaths. Sclafani paced the Morehead City offense from the leadoff spot with a pair of hits and one of the Marlins' two runs scored.

The Marlins will look to sweep Columbia and earn the team's third straight win in Saturday's nightcap. Dave Krasnowiecki is scheduled to make his Marlin debut on the mound.
